The so-called illicit proceeds, namely crypto mining profits, are said to amount to AU$9,000 (approximately US$6,200).

The AFP said the 33-year-old man (whose actual name was not disclosed) used his authority as an IT specialist to "manipulate programs and use the computing power of the agency's computer network for cryptocurrency mining." The so-called illicit gains, namely crypto mining earnings, reportedly amounted to A$9,000 (approximately US$6,200).

The AFP carried out a search warrant at his Sydney home on March 5 before the man appeared in the Sydney Magistrates Court. They reportedly seized his personal laptop, personal phone, employee ID card and data files. The man faces two charges, including: "Unauthorized tampering with data causing harm, contrary to section 477.2 of the Criminal Code (Cth) 1995; Unauthorized tampering with restricted data, contrary to section 477.2 of the Criminal Code (Cth) 1995" Article 478.1.

In a statement, Goldsmid emphasized the seriousness of the alleged crimes committed by public officials. "Australian taxpayers place their trust in public officials to play an important role in our communities with the utmost integrity. Any suspected criminal behavior that betrays this trust for personal gain will be investigated and prosecuted," he said.

The AFP announcement stated that the maximum sentences for these charges are 10 years and 2 years respectively.

In May 2018, Cointelegraph reported that employees at the local headquarters of Ukraine’s Rivne National Police allegedly illegally mined cryptocurrencies on the job for four months.
