Will Satoshi Nakamoto’s worries reappear? WikiLeaks accepted donations of over 4,043 Bitcoins worth up to $39,000 at its old address. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange
Assange’s arrest in 2019, Bitcoin (BTC) has been flowing into the organization’s donation address. However, the massive amount of over 4.043 BTC in the wallet did not help free Assange.

Assange now faces extradition to the United States, and generous donations have done little to secure his safe release. However, Assange's arrest accelerated donations from WikiLeaks Bitcoin wallet addresses that have been public since 2011. Donations to the old WikiLeaks address accelerated around April 2019, when Assange was taken from his hiding place in the Ecuadorian embassy and handed over to British authorities.

WikiLeaks changed its main Bitcoin donation address about a week ago and has already received a large number of donations. WikiLeaks now holds ~6.12 in its new wallet
BTC. Messages signed with the old private key point to the new donation address.

Previously, some people believed that if WikiLeaks accepted Bitcoin donations, it might trigger a crackdown on Bitcoin by government authorities.

Even more encouraging is the fact that WikiLeaks has not done any harm to the Bitcoin community. On the contrary, despite WikiLeaks being an early adopter of Bitcoin, BTC owners were not persecuted at the time, and it was not until years later that the Bitcoin project gained traction.

Satoshi Nakamoto mentioned WikiLeaks in 2010

Initially, WikiLeaks' involvement in Bitcoin worried even Satoshi Nakamoto. One of his recent posts on the Bitcointalk forum mentioned WikiLeaks.

Nakamoto wrote on December 11, 2010,

"In any other situation it would be great to draw attention to it. But WikiLeaks is breaking a hornet's nest and the swarm is heading our way."

Satoshi Nakamoto called on WikiLeaks not to accept Bitcoin, which is still a small test community in its infancy. At this stage, if it is not handled properly, it will only destroy Bitcoin.

Other early Bitcoin board members, including Garzik, were skeptical of the actual use of Bitcoin to support WikiLeaks.

It would be highly unwise to make Bitcoin such a prominent target at such an early stage of the project. There can be a lot of “collateral damage” to the Bitcoin community when taking a principled stance

Despite this, Bitcoin has survived and thrived, whereas in 2010, BTC was too small to really attract the attention of regulators. But now, as WikiLeaks continues to receive donations, the threat may be repeated.
