Coin Circle (120Btc.com) News: The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) formally sued the leading crypto exchange and its founder Zhao Changpeng (CZ) last night (6) for violating U.S. securities laws. Not only did Binance investors withdraw more than $2 billion in a short period of time under panic, but it also led to a decline in the overall cryptocurrency market, with Bitcoin falling below $26,000.

Although this is not the first time that Binance has been investigated by U.S. regulators, the SEC has filed 13 charges at once, and the experience of FTX's collapse is still vivid, which has repeatedly affected investors' sensitive emotions.

The following is a summary of the time points when Binance was investigated by various regulatory agencies since 2022. Most of the previous investigations were loud but little action. Whether Binance can safely survive the regulatory pressure this time will continue to track for you. (The following events are arranged in reverse order)

2023/6/5: SEC accuses Binance and founder Zhao Changpeng of violating US securities laws

According to court documents, the SEC has filed a total of 13 charges, including operating an unregistered exchange, illegally offering and selling securities to US investors, including BNB, BUS, the "BNB
Vault" program and Binance's "Simple Earn" program... etc.

The legal document also states that between October 2022 and January 2023, CZ personally received $62.5 million transferred from a Binance bank account. And it is believed that Binance.US's market maker partners Sigma
Chain and Merit Peak are basically controlled by Binance and there are illegal acts of mixing billions of dollars of customer assets.

2023/5/13: Binance withdraws from the Canadian market!

Binance tweeted announcing its withdrawal from the Canadian market, citing Canada's guidelines for too strict.

The article also revealed that since Binance founder CZ is a Canadian citizen, he has high expectations and feelings for Canada's blockchain industry, and this withdrawal makes him feel very helpless.

2023/5/6: US Department of Justice investigates whether it violates Russian sanctions

Bloomberg quoted five people familiar with the matter as saying that the US Department of Justice's National Security Division is investigating whether Binance and its company executives violated sanctions against Russia and allowed Russians to transfer funds through Binance to evade US sanctions.

A person familiar with the matter revealed that Binance has been in discussions with the Department of Justice to resolve the previous investigation into the exchange's allegations of circumventing sanctions against Iran before strict compliance measures were in place.

2023/2/13: The United States ordered Paxos to stop issuing BUSD

The New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) ordered stablecoin issuer Paxos to stop issuing new Binance
USD (BUSD). A Binance spokesperson stated that BUSD redemption-related work is not affected and Paxos reserves are safe.

Paxos officially announced that it will terminate its partnership with Binance for BUSD, and stated that the existing BUSD will continue to be fully supported by Paxos, and will still be fully supported and redeemed until at least February 2024.

2022/12/12: Binance is rumored to have been investigated by the US Department of Justice for 4 years

Reuters reported at the time that it pointed the finger at Binance, revealing that the US Department of Justice had begun investigating Binance as early as 2018.

Two sources said that some of the six federal prosecutors in the case believed that the evidence collected could be used to take positive action against the exchange and bring criminal charges against individual executives including founder CZ; but other prosecutors believed that it would take time to review more evidence.

2022/6/7: SEC questions whether BNB's ICO constitutes an illegal sale of securities

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is reportedly investigating whether Binance's ICO of BNB in 2017 constituted an unregistered sale of securities.

In response, Zhao Changpeng (CZ) responded: We strongly believe that BNB is not a security: The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission regularly asks questions about Binance and its products, and Binance is also in regular contact with the authorities.

2022/2/15: SEC suspects "CZ controls two market makers"

The Wall Street Journal quoted people familiar with the matter as saying that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is investigating Binance's U.S. branch Binance.US and the relationship between Binance founder Zhao Changpeng's two trading companies.

The two trading companies are Sigma ChainAG and Merit Peak
Ltd, which are currently market makers for cryptocurrency trading on Binance US. Binance US stated on its official website that affiliated market makers can trade on the exchange, but did not specify which companies can do so. The SEC asked Binance US to provide information about the above two entities. People familiar with the matter also pointed out that Binance US is currently under law enforcement investigation.

According to documents from 2019, Zhao Changpeng was associated with two trading companies, Sigma Chain AG and Merit Peak Ltd. Former Binance executives also told the Wall Street Journal that Zhao Changpeng had controlled both companies as of the end of last year.
