In an interview with CNN Business, he discussed his views on Bitcoin, central bank digital currencies, and Facebook’s stablecoin project Libra.
Comparing Bitcoin to central bank digital currencies being developed in countries such as China and Sweden, McLaughlin said, “Central bank digital currencies will not be the proof-of-work consensus mechanism used by Bitcoin. It will be a nearly centralized system that will not be open to anonymous users running nodes.”
The same is true for private digital currencies like Libra, McLaughlin said. The downside of the proof-of-work consensus mechanism is that it requires a lot of energy to power the computers used to solve math problems to win the right to add the next block to the ledger. This makes crypto mining a very expensive task, and now that Bitcoin has undergone its third block reward "halving," miners' rewards may be reduced, which may make it unsustainable.
