In the wave of the digital age, technological advancement has brought convenience but also brought new challenges. Recently, an unprecedented phenomenon of Android mining worms broke out for the first time worldwide. What is shocking is that these worms turned smart TVs into "mining machines", which brought problems to users' privacy and device security. Huge threat. Let’s dive into this emerging issue to uncover the truth and implications behind it.

Android Mining Worms: A New Threat in the Digital Age

The Android mining worm is a type of malware that uses smart devices to mine virtual currency. It quietly intrudes into devices such as smart TVs and uses the computing power of the device to perform mining operations. The emergence of this worm not only causes smart TVs to lose their original functions, but also causes problems such as reduced device performance and soaring electricity bills. What's more serious is that users' private data may be stolen, causing irreparable losses.

Smart TV: From entertainment tool to “mining machine”

As an important entertainment tool for modern families, smart TVs are supposed to bring convenience and happiness to people. However, once infected by Android mining worms, smart TVs will transform into "mining machines" and silently mine virtual currencies for criminals. Without the user's knowledge, the device is misused, which not only affects the user experience, but also damages the life of the device and brings security risks to the family.

Threats and Challenges: The Security Dilemma of Smart TVs

The emergence of Android mining worms has brought serious challenges to the security of smart TVs. Traditional security protection measures are difficult to completely prevent the intrusion of this new type of malware, and it is often difficult for users to detect signs that their devices are being exploited. Faced with this threat, users need to strengthen their security awareness and update device software in a timely manner to prevent personal privacy and device security from being infringed.

Protect Yourself: The Importance of Smart TV Security

In digital life, smart TVs have become an indispensable part of the home. In order to protect the privacy and security of themselves and their families, users need to pay attention to the security issues of smart TVs and regularly check whether the device is infected by malware to avoid leakage of personal information and abuse of the device. Only by remaining vigilant and taking timely security measures can we effectively prevent threats such as Android mining worms.

Looking to the future: Development trends of smart TVs

Although security threats such as Android mining worms pose challenges to smart TVs, smart TVs will continue to grow as technology continues to advance. In the future, smart TVs are expected to improve user experience and ensure device safety through more intelligent security protection systems. At the same time, users also need to continuously improve their security awareness, keep pace with the times, and jointly build a safe and convenient digital living environment.

Conclusion

In the digital era, smart TVs, as an important part of daily life, are facing increasingly complex security challenges. The emergence of Android mining worms reminds us that security awareness and protective measures are crucial. Only by strengthening security awareness and updating device software in a timely manner can we effectively respond to security threats and protect personal privacy and device security. Let us work together to build a safe and reliable digital living environment to meet future challenges.

China News Service, February 6
Recently, 360 Network Security Research Institute detected the world's first Android platform mining worm ADB.Miner. This malicious program affects many smart TVs, TV boxes, set-top boxes, etc. with the "ADB debugging" switch turned on. This group of malicious programs is not a traditional Android virus, but a new type of malicious program that specializes in "mining" in the background of Android devices. Within 24 hours, 5,000 devices were infected, and so far, more than 7,000 devices have been infected. China and South Korea are the hardest hit areas by this worm.

The virus that slipped in through the door

ADB is a bridge connecting Android devices and PCs. It allows users to fully operate the device on the computer. It is a debugging interface provided by the Android system to facilitate software developers. Generally, software developers enable USB debugging options. to use this interface. But in fact, this interface can be bound directly to a network port. Once bound to a network port, an attacker can remotely operate an Android device without physical contact.

Port 5555 is on Android devices
The working port of the ADB debugging interface should be closed under normal conditions, but for unknown reasons some devices mistakenly opened the port, and ADB.Miner invaded the user's mobile phone through this port.

360 Network Security Research Institute monitoring found that 5555
The scanning traffic on the port began to reach 3 times the daily data at around 15:00 pm on February 3, and reached 10 times around 24:00. This abnormal phenomenon generally indicates the emergence of new zombies, worms or new network events. After further digging and verification, 360 Network Security Research Institute discovered the ADB.Miner worm.

In August 2016, the world's first large-scale IoT attack, the "US East Coast Internet Outage" incident, was first monitored and discovered by the honeypot system of 360 Cyber Security Research Institute. 360 monitored the abnormal network traffic and was ultimately confirmed to be Mirai, a rapidly spreading botnet. It was precisely because of its assistance in the investigation and analysis of this incident that 360 received public thanks from the FBI after the case was solved.

Smart TVs have also become “mining machines”

Since 2017, the explosion of blockchain and virtual currencies has caused the price of virtual currencies to continue to rise around the world, thus triggering a "mining boom." In addition to conventional mining through mining machines, some people have come up with the idea of making a fortune through mining viruses, that is, by spreading viruses, ordinary users' mobile phones can be turned into free "mining machines", maximizing the Reduce mining costs.

The "Android Platform Mining Trojan Research Report" recently released by 360 stated that from 2013 to January 2018, 360 FiberHome Labs captured more than 1,200 Android platform mining Trojans. In January 2018 alone, nearly 400 Android platform mining Trojans were captured, accounting for nearly one-third of all Android platform mining Trojans. It can be seen that mining Trojans on the Android platform are experiencing explosive growth.

The mining malware program ADB.Miner spreads through worms, which greatly increases the speed of transmission.

1\. The ADB.Miner worm gets rid of the propagation method through social deception such as "short message/spam", but directly infects and spreads from the ADB interface.

2\. The ADB interface has quite rich functions, among which the file upload function and shell instructions provide convenience for the reproduction and operation of worms.

3\. During the propagation, ADB.Miner reused the code of the SYN scanning module in MIRAI in an attempt to speed up the 5555
Detection process of port openness to increase propagation speed. It is worth noting that this is also the first time that MIRAI code has been used in malicious code on Android devices.

360 Network Security Research Institute’s monitoring found that the propagation speed of the ADB.Miner worm roughly doubled every 12 hours. Statistics showed that at 12:00 on February 4, approximately 2,700 devices were infected, and by midnight of that day, this number Numbers have been reached
5800. After the number of infections reached 7,000 at around 15:00 on February 5, it has not increased for about 20 hours. It can be considered that the worm has passed the outbreak period and entered a stable period.

Once infected with ADB.Miner, the user's Android device will become a "mining machine", a large number of internal resources will be maliciously occupied, and the power consumption will also increase significantly, causing the Android device to be slow and hot. If malicious programs continue to "mine" in mobile phones, the battery of the user's mobile phone is very likely to be damaged, causing the phone to be scrapped. What's more noteworthy is that this malicious program also has root permissions, posing more serious security risks.

Security experts from 360 Network Security Research Institute recommend users:

1\. If you find that the Android device at home is hot or slow, check in time and make sure that the ADB debugging of the Android device is turned off. You can check it in Settings-System-Developer Options-Network ADB Debugging;

2. Try to avoid rooting your phone;

3. Avoid downloading applications whose security is unknown;

4. Use security software such as 360 Mobile Guard to prevent malicious programs.
