The issue of energy consumption in the Bitcoin network has long been a point of contention between loyal supporters and critics. The most cited data from Digiconomist states that if Bitcoin were a country, the network consumes as much energy as Colombia each year, making it the 42nd largest energy consumer in the world.

Meanwhile, a report from Coinshares made a claim about this figure, saying that the vast majority of the energy is produced by renewable energy.

The Cambridge Center for Alternative Finance, a research institute under the Cambridge Business School of the University of Cambridge, released the CBECI (Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index) index yesterday, which aims to count the total annual electricity consumption of the Bitcoin network in real time.

The CBECI counts the total energy consumption of the Bitcoin network each year, updated every 30 seconds. The researchers also provide a tool to compare Bitcoin's electricity consumption levels with other electricity use cases, and provide a range of parameters to provide more comprehensive real-time data.

TWh). A chart comparing the Bitcoin network to the total electricity consumption of nation states around the world shows that Bitcoin ranks 43rd among the world's "countries", consuming more electricity than many countries including Romania, Denmark, Israel, Singapore and Uzbekistan.

The Cambridge Center for Alternative Finance noted that the purpose of creating the index is to provide objective, neutral data for use by policymakers, regulators, researchers and stakeholders, and to help debate around the sustainability and environmental impact of Bitcoin mining.

The agency said that so far, there are few reliable statistics on Bitcoin's electricity consumption, as most institutions only provide lagging data, so a more comprehensive analysis of the crypto industry's carbon emissions is needed.
